The Golden Globes award ceremony may have been turned into a platform for the Hollywood elite to signal their virtuous “turnaround” on the topic of sexual assault, but a bizarre tribute during the show demonstrates that the crowd still isn’t serious about speaking out about abuse.

Feel-good “hashtag” shirts and “all is forgiven” speeches from Oprah Winfrey dominated the first Globes event since the Harvey Weinstein scandal exploded… yet stars seemed to have no problem pretending that brutal assault is fine, as long as it gives them material for a movie.

After former “West Wing” actress Allison Janney won “Best Supporting Actress” at the event, she used the opportunity to defend and praise a person who was involved in one of the most famous assaults of the 1990’s: Tonya Harding.

Harding, for those who don’t remember, was at the center of a shocking physical attack during the run-up to the 1994 winter Olympics. Figure skating star Nancy Kerrigan nearly had her leg and dreams shattered when a thug violently struck her with a police baton.

Footage of the young and beautiful skater distraught with pain and despair in the aftermath of the attack stunned America.

“Kerrigan’s father, Dan, rushed to his sobbing daughter, lifted her and carried her into the locker room,” the New York Times reported in January 1994. “‘It hurts, it hurts so bad; I’m so scared,’ Kerrigan told her father.”

Then shock turned to outrage: It was revealed that fellow Olympic hopeful Tonya Harding was complicit in a criminal plan to take out her competition. While she hadn’t directly carried out the attack, she had known about it and did nothing to stop it… and then tried to cover for her ex-husband and others involved.

“Tonya Harding pleaded guilty to conspiring to hinder prosecution in the attack on Nancy Kerrigan and was placed on three years’ probation and fined $160,000,” the Times reported.

“Jeff Gillooly, Harding’s former husband, and three others, including her bodyguard, Shawn Eckhardt, accused of having hatched the plot, spent time in prison. Harding was permanently barred from all amateur skating competition.”

Fast forward to 2018. Tonya Harding is now the subject of a film about that time — and Hollywood can’t stop fawning over her.

“Tonya Harding struggled to hold back tears on Sunday as actress Allison Janney sang her praises at the Golden Globes,” The Daily Mail reported about Sunday’s awards show.

“During her acceptance speech, the West Wing star pointed to the former ice skater in the audience and thanked her for ‘sharing her story’ – and the pair were later seen partying up a storm together,” the news source continued.

Nancy Kerrigan didn’t seem to be invited.

In a strange twist, Hollywood has taken a person convicted of protecting men who literally bashed a young woman’s leg in, and made her into some sort of celebrated “victim.”

“What this movie did is tell a story about class in America, tell a story about the disenfranchised, tell the story about a woman who was not embraced for her individuality, tell a story about truth and the perception of truth in the media and truths we all tell ourselves,” actress Allison Janney declared.

Welcome to social justice: Tonya Harding is now supposed to be admired and her crime will be swept under the rug, because she was “not embraced for her individuality” when she was, er, covering up a heinous assault.

That’s how the left wants everything judged. “A story about class” and “the disenfranchised” essentially suggests that Tonya Harding is exonerated and even celebrated, all because she came from a troubled childhood. Everything must be seen through the skewed lens of social justice and “privilege.”

It’s worth remembering that the skater now admits to lying about the infamous incident. “She initially denied having any knowledge of the situation,” explained The Mail. Furthermore, Nancy Kerrigan told ABC News that she has never received an apology from Tonya Harding.

It has taken Harding over two decades to actually tell the truth.

“Earlier this month it was reported that she was finally stating once and for all that she was aware of a possible plot to attack one of her fellow competitors ahead of the 1994 Olympic Games,” continued the U.K. newspaper.

This is Hollywood’s new hero. When it comes to ignoring actual victims and excusing abuse, it looks like Tinseltown still hasn’t learned its lesson.
